If the next XBOX and PlayStation do the same as Wii U and offer the ability to use any external hard drive for game & data storage for the console, then it’ll be relatively cheap to have both a 2 or 3 terabyte main external hard drive, as well as a backup 2 or 3 terabyte external hard drive. The remedy for that is to just keep a clone drive handy that acts as a backup for the main hard drive. Therefore, it would take me roughly 11 to 12 hours, at maximum/optimal downloading speed, to download an entire 50 gigabyte game. Every 8 megabits per second = 1 megabyte per second, so 10 megabits per second = 1.25 megabytes per second download speed. I currently have a basic fiber Internet connection with a download speed of 10 Mbps and upload speed of 10 Mbps as well. For example, next-gen XBOX & PlayStation games will all likely be Blu-ray sized, meaning anywhere from at least 25 gigabytes up to 50 gigabytes. The only downside being that if your hard drive crashes or something like that, you have to re-download everything which, even if you have a fast internet connection, can take a long while, especially if you have several games and/or if a game(s) is large in size. No need to switch discs, no worrying about discs getting scratched, faster load times, no physical storage space needed on book/DVD shelf (less clutter, in other words), less to carry with you if you go somewhere (friends house, hotel, moving to a new place, etc.), and so on.
